Anthracite
Anthracite is a high-quality variety of coal, characterized by its high carbon content and low impurity content. It is considered the purest and hardest type of coal, making it extremely valuable in various industrial applications.
Its geological formation occurs when coal undergoes a process of metamorphism to a greater degree than other types of coal, such as hard coal or lignite. This transformation results from higher pressure and temperature exerted on carbonaceous sediments over geologic time.
Anthracite is distinguished by its unique physical and chemical characteristics, including its high density, low volatile matter and sulfur content, and high fixed carbon content. These properties give it slow and regular combustion, intense heat and low smoke production, making it an ideal fuel for applications requiring high energy efficiency and low pollutant emissions.
The main uses of anthracite are in domestic and industrial heating, electricity generation in thermal power plants, as well as in the manufacture of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in metallurgical processes. Due to its high calorific value and chemical stability, anthracite is also used in the production of briquettes and coal pellets for stoves, boilers and industrial ovens.
